Julia Child's French former holiday home is called 'La Pitchoune' (meaning 'the little one' in Provençal) and was often lovingly referred to as 'La Peetch' by Julia Child, her husband Paul and their friends. It is located on a hillside of the small Provençal village of Plascassier, close to the town of Grasse and about a half-hour's drive from the city of Cannes and the Côte d'Azur. The charming stucco cottage was built in 1963 on grounds belonging to Julia Child's best friend and co-author of 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', Simone 'Simca' Beck, and her husband Jean Fischbacher. With a 'handshake deal', the Childs promised the Fischbachers to return the house to them when they had finished their use. A truly unique feature of 'La Pitchoune' is the world's sole, still existing Julia Child's kitchen in a private home. The kitchen was designed by Julia's husband Paul and modeled on the one in their house in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is nowadays exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum. Just like her Cambridge's kitchen, Child's charming Provençal kitchen has unusually tall counters to accommodate Child's tall 6ft2 - frame, and walls covered with Peg-Board upon which hangs a vast array of professional cooking equipment. Paul and his twin brother, Charlie, had painted the outlines of all the tools that can still be seen today.
